Kush (on Mondays 2nd september 2024) How Did Kush Originate? According to the Varaha Purana, after Lord Vishnu defeated Hiranyaksha and rescued the Earth from the underworld, the hair on his neck fell to the ground, turning into Kush. The Skanda Purana states that Vishnu tricked Pativrata Vrinda, who then cursed him. To fulfill this curse, Vishnu manifested as Kush. The Lord said, "Darbha (Kush) is my glory, born from the hair on my body." Kush’s Position: Brahma resides at the root of Kush, Vishnu in the middle, and Shiva at the tip. What Happens When You Touch Kush? Touching Kush is believed to help a person attain heaven because it is sacred, originating from God’s body and rich with divine essence. Why is Kush Used in Divine and Ancestral Rituals? Kush is crucial for divine and ancestral rituals. No religious activity—daily, occasional, or ceremonial—can be completed without Kush. According to the Mahabharata, Bhishma Pitamaha offered pindas (rice balls) to ancestors, placing them on Kush rather than directly into their hands. This was because only a fraction of offerings would reach the ancestors if given by hand. Therefore, Kush is considered the protector of Brahmins in spiritual practices. Additional Benefits of Kush: - Kush purifies polluted air by 60% and is used to protect against earthly electric currents. - The Garuda Purana suggests that placing a dying person on a Kush mat with their spine aligned can lead to a peaceful death. - In the Vedas, Kush is associated with longevity and is highly valued for its medicinal properties, helping to prevent and treat serious illnesses like heart disease, hair loss, and brain disorders. Why is Kush Important for Sacred Use? Scientific findings suggest that Kush has a direct connection to the heart, which enhances its significance in sacred rituals.
